Docki user guide

Docki is a spaced-repetition app: every deck has a Document (the lesson) and Flashcards to remember it. AI drafts cards and quizzes from the Document, and the FSRS scheduler brings each card back right before you would forget it. This guide walks through every part of the app.

Getting started

  1. Create an account with your email and a password (at least 8 characters). Your decks are saved to this account, so you can sign in from any browser or device.
  2. Make a deck: in the sidebar choose New Deck, then a Knowledge deck (lessons, concepts, anything) or a Vocabulary deck (words of a language). Or Import an Anki deck you already have.
  3. Add something to learn: write or paste the lesson in the deck’s Document, then let AI generate flashcards — or write cards yourself.
  4. Review a little every day: open Today and press Start Review (or Space).

Finding your way around

  • Sidebar — Decks Tree: your folders and decks. Next to each one are three numbers: cards that are New, in Learning, and Due today. The pill at the top says Synced while your changes are saved, Offline when the server can’t be reached (changes are kept and retried).
  • Top bar: Decks (Today), Browse, Stats, Sync, plus Create Card, the shortcuts list, Settings and your account menu.
  • Today: what is due across your decks, your recent decks, and tabs for Knowledge and Vocab decks.
  • On a phone: the sections sit in a row under the header, and Today lists your Decks Tree, Recent decks and Tags. Everything else works the same.

Decks and folders

  • New Deck and Add Folder are at the bottom of the sidebar. Folders can hold decks and subfolders; drag a deck or folder to move it.
  • Right-click a deck or folder (or use its ⋯ button) for Study now, Rename, Duplicate, Deck settings…, new decks inside a folder and Delete. Double-click a name (or press F2) to rename it.
  • Opening a folder shows its decks and lets you study all of them at once.
  • A deck has two tabs: Document and Flashcards. Study starts a review of that deck only.

Deleting a deck removes its Document, flashcards and review history. Export a backup first (see Import, backup and sync) if you might want it back.

Documents

The Document is the lesson behind a deck. Flashcards and quizzes are generated from it, and each generated card remembers the section it came from.

  • Edit (E) opens the editor. It understands Markdown: headings, bold, lists, tables, code, links, images and Mermaid diagrams. Save with Ctrl+S.
  • Select any text to get a menu: Explain in detail, Give illustrative examples or Simplify (AI answers beside the text), Ask AI about this… (your own question about it), Create new Flashcard (Ctrl+N / ⌘N where the browser allows it), Generate quiz (a short quiz on just that part), Read aloud and Copy excerpt. The same menu appears on the text of a card while you review.
  • Ask AI opens a chat about the Document. Follow-up questions keep the context of the conversation, and an Explain / Simplify / Example answer can continue there with Ask follow-up. Tap the microphone to speak your question — it is turned into text you can check before sending. Each answer can be copied or turned into a Flashcard. The conversation is kept in this browser; New chat starts over.
  • Edit with AI appears beside the text you select in the Document editor (on a phone, above the keyboard) and rewrites it: turn it into a diagram or a table, make bullet points, rewrite it more clearly, add an example, fix the spelling — or describe your own change. You see the result before it replaces anything.
  • Beautify (in the editor) makes the whole page easier to read: it adds paragraph breaks where the idea changes, bolds key terms and puts foreign or technical terms and examples in italics. Choose which of the three to do and how much emphasis (Light, Balanced or Rich). Your words never change — the app refuses any answer that does — and code, tables and images are left alone. The preview shows the result at once; Undo (or Ctrl+Z) brings the old page back.
  • Analyze shows Knowledge Coverage: the concepts in the Document and which of them have no flashcard yet. Generate Missing Flashcards fills the gaps.

Headings (## Concept) and bold key terms help AI and Knowledge Coverage find the concepts in your Document.

Flashcards

Writing cards

  • Create Card (A) opens the card editor: a Front (the question), a Back (the answer), the deck and tags.
  • Both sides support formatting, lists, code, images, audio, video and diagrams. To add a photo, upload one, paste or drop it, search for one, or paste an image link.
  • Add a typed answer to practise writing the answer: during review you type it and see what you got right, letter by letter.
  • Source links the card to a passage of the Document, so you can jump back to the context while studying.

Generating cards with AI

On the Document tab choose Generate Flashcards (or Generate with AI on the Flashcards tab). Select text first to use only that part of the Document. Then pick:

  • A style: One card per item, Vocabulary, Q&A, Fill in the blank or Reverse — or write your own Instructions.
  • The Number of Cards and the Difficulty (easy, medium, hard).

You review the drafts before they are added: edit any card, remove the ones you don’t want, then add the rest to the deck.

If the server has no AI key, AI features still work with simple built-in rules — useful to try the app, but the results are much more basic. Settings → AI shows which one you are using.

Vocabulary decks

A vocabulary deck turns a list of words into complete cards: a photo, the meaning, pronunciation (IPA) with audio, an example sentence and its translation — all filled in for you and editable afterwards.

  1. Create a Vocabulary deck and, in Deck settings…, choose the Language you are learning and the language for Meanings and translations.
  2. Choose Generate Flashcards, type the words one per line — or use Find words in the Document to pick them out of a text — pick the voice for the audio (each voice shows its price and how many characters it will read), then generate.
  3. Turn on Play the card’s audio when each side shows in Deck settings to hear each word as it appears. Press R in review to replay it — or tap a sound’s play button — and press again within a few seconds to hear it slowly (a turtle shows); once more brings back the usual speed.

Met a new word while reading a Document or reviewing a knowledge card? Select it and choose Add to Vocab deck…, pick the deck in the folder tree (or create one there), and the full card is made in that deck.

Long word lists can take up to a minute. Any Anki deck can also become a vocabulary deck when you import it.

Studying

Start Review on Today studies everything due; Study on a deck or folder studies only that. Each card shows its question first — try to remember the answer, then reveal it (Space) and grade yourself honestly:

ButtonKeyWhen to use it
Again1You didn’t remember it. The card comes back soon.
Hard2You remembered, with real effort.
Good3You remembered it normally. The usual choice.
Easy4Instant and effortless. The card waits much longer.

The FSRS scheduler uses your grades to work out how well you know each card and when you are about to forget it. Each button shows when the card will come back. A few minutes a day is enough; when nothing is due you’ll see All caught up for today.

While reviewing

  • Undo (Ctrl+Z) takes back the last answer; E edits the current card; H opens its hint.
  • V reads the card aloud (or just the text you selected); ← → move between parts while it reads.
  • Ask AI (the speech-bubble button) chats about the current card, typed or spoken. Before you show the answer it gives hints instead of the answer; each card keeps its own conversation.
  • On a phone, swipe the card or double-tap it to answer (see Shortcuts and gestures), and use Focus to show only the card and your progress.
  • Esc leaves the review. Your progress is saved after every card.

Quizzes

A quiz checks a whole lesson at once. Choose Generate Quiz on the Document tab (or Quiz on selected text), pick the number of questions and the difficulty, and answer multiple-choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank and short-answer questions.

At the end, Quiz Complete shows what you know well (Strong) and what Needs Review. Flashcards for weak areas turns the weak spots into cards for your deck.

Browse and search

  • Search (Ctrl+K or /) finds cards, decks and tags from anywhere.
  • Browse (B) lists all your cards in a table. Filter with words, tag:name (or #name) and deck:name; use the tabs for due, learning, new and suspended cards; sort and choose the columns.
  • Select cards (X or Ctrl+click) to Move to deck…, Suspend / Unsuspend, Reset to new, Duplicate or Delete them together.

A suspended card stays in its deck but is left out of reviews until you unsuspend it.

Import, backup and sync

Import from Anki

Import in the sidebar accepts Anki packages (.apkg, .colpkg) with their images and audio, keeping their deck structure. For each package you choose whether it becomes a knowledge or a vocabulary deck. Large packages keep importing in the background — the panel in the corner shows the progress.

Sync

Everything is saved to your account as you work and follows you to any device where you sign in. Sync Now in the top bar sends pending changes immediately.

Backup

On the Sync page, Export JSON downloads a copy of all your decks, documents, cards and review history. Import JSON restores such a copy — it replaces everything currently in your account. Reset sample data deletes your data and restores the example decks.

Stats

Stats shows cards studied today, your Again rate, total reviews, how many cards you have in each state, your reviews over the last 14 days and a forecast of the cards due in the next 14 days.

Settings

Open Settings with the gear icon in the top bar. Changes apply immediately.

Report a problem

Found a bug, or have an idea that would make Docki better? Tell us from inside the app:

  1. Open your account menu (your initials, top right) and choose Send feedback — or go to Settings → Help & Feedback.
  2. Pick Report a bug or Suggest an idea, give it a short title and describe it. For a bug, say what you did, what happened and what you expected.
  3. Add up to 3 screenshots: Add a file, or simply paste a screenshot (Ctrl+V) into the dialog.
  4. If both are offered, choose how to send it under Send via: Email (we reply to your account’s email address) or Discord (posted to the team’s Discord). Then press Send.

Along with your message we receive your account’s email and the page you were on, so we can reproduce the problem and get back to you. You can send up to 5 reports every 10 minutes.

Prefer to chat? Join our Discord (in the account menu, the feedback dialog and Settings) to ask questions, follow updates and talk with other learners.

Troubleshooting

The sidebar says “Offline”.
Docki can’t reach the server right now. Keep the tab open — your changes are kept and sent as soon as the connection is back. Closing the tab before it says Synced again can lose them.
AI answers look very basic.
The server has no AI key, so the built-in rules are used. Settings → AI shows the current state.
Read aloud sounds robotic, or stopped using the Google voice.
Your monthly Google-voice allowance may be used up (see Settings → Read aloud) and the browser voice has taken over. Microsoft Edge has the most natural browser voices.
Nothing to review today.
All due cards are done, or a daily limit you set is reached. Raise or clear it in Settings → Daily Limits, or use Study on a deck to keep going.
Swipes on my phone go back a page.
Start the swipe on the card, not at the very edge of the screen — that edge is the browser’s Back. Gestures can be turned off in Settings → Appearance.
Something else is wrong.
Report it with a screenshot — it helps us a lot.
